- Ear
surgery - Otoplasty
- is specifically designed to "pin back" or
reposition protruding ears and create natural-looking folds and
convolutions. Otoplasty is very rewarding because of the visual
improvement and psychological satisfaction. Children and adults with
large outstanding ears are often subject to unkind teasing, emotional
stress, self-consciousness, and taunts because of the appearance of
their ears. Surgical intervention can effectively be performed at any
age on either children and adults to correct address this problem.
This procedure also has great appeal for men, because most wear their
hair short. Sometimes only one ear protrudes. However, surgery may
need to be performed on both ears.
Incisions are hidden on the back part of each ear and thereafter are
not apparent. A protective dressing is applied to protect the ear
following surgery.
The psychological benefits of this highly successful procedure provide
a high degree of patient satisfaction. Patients can expect to return
to work within one week.

Otoplasty on a
child is usually done under general anesthesia due to the young age.
With adults however, this procedure is very easily done under local
anesthesia with small amounts of sedation. The incision is made behind the
ear and the excessive skin, muscle and cartilage is carefully removed.
When the ear lacks certain folds and definition, sutures are placed to
recreate these anatomic landmarks and a more natural appearing ear. At the
completion of the procedure a circumferential bandage is placed around the
head which protects the ears in a secure way.
