A
scar on an individual's face or
body can affect their entire personality including their self-confidence. The
specific characteristic of any scar is that it cannot be removed or
eliminated, without leaving any evidence that it ever existed. Scar
revision surgery is a
procedure or set of procedures that can make scars more inconspicuous,
although no procedure can eliminate a scar entirely.
Much of the goal is to maximize
camouflage and this can be done through abrasion or excision, with or
without irregularization. An irregular scar is often less conspicuous than
a straight one because a casual eye will easily recognize and follow a
linear scar. Each scar is different, so the procedure that your surgeon
may recommend will vary for each individual.
Scar revision is usually performed
with local anesthesia and IV sedation. The scar is usually excised and
replaced with a new scar designed to be less conspicuous. The incisions
are usually closed in multiple layers with skin sutures made of material
that will dissolve on its own.
Treatment involves incisions made to cut out the scar or blemish. Each cut
is made into the skin, regardless of where the scar is. This produces scar
tissue, nature's method of healing itself. Then the scar is repositioned
so as to be less conspicuous. Then, if needed, Laser Skin Resurfacing
may be carried out. Finally, injections may be made in the incision area
to soften and flatten the scar.
The goal is to replace an unsightly, disfiguring scar by:
-
narrowing
the width of the scar
-
flattening
a raised scar
-
softening
a hard or firm scar
-
camouflage
a scar in a skin fold or in the hair, when possible
The result is a
newly better scar : it is fine-lined, is level with the surrounding
surface, is about the same color as the adjacent skin and causes no
distortion or pull on the surrounding structures -in short, a scar that is
as inconspicuous as possible.
It can take from 6-18 months for the new inconspicuous scar to heal. The
actual healing of the scar may take 6-18 months for its final appearance.
