Skin

Skin Resurfacing is a method of removing the superficial layer of epidermal skin and allowing the deeper layer of cells to regenerate a fresh sheet of skin. The new skin is characterized by fewer wrinkles, better texture, color and feel.
The process is similar to a controlled sun burn where new skin is regenerated over the course of several weeks. The different techniques utilize unique technologies for removing the outer layer of damaged skin.
Skin resurfacing can be done through three different methods, all of them are able to improve the fine wrinkles of aging skin as well as improve many pre-existing facial scars.

1. Laser resurfacing

is done in the operating room. It uses a carbon dioxide laser to emit an infrared light that vaporizes the top layer of skin. Most people receive some IV sedation and local anesthesia. The laser can be used with great precision and is effective in treating small wrinkles caused by sun exposure. There are several moist towels that are placed around the neck and facial areas during this procedure.

2. Chemical peels

can be performed in a minor procedure room or in the office.
A chemical peel is a procedure that uses a chemical solution to peel away wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented, or sun damaged facial skin. The procedure is non-invasive and poses little risk. The result is softer, smoother, and more youthful looking skin.

The superficial peels only rejuvenate skin texture but allow rapid recovery. Deeper peels are aimed at removing facial wrinkles but are associated with greater redness and longer recovery.

3. Dermabrasion

is also done in a minor operating room or the office. It may be the most appropriate option for patients with darker skin or for those who suffer from deeper imperfections. The affected areas can be thoroughly anesthetized with creams and small injections. Dermabrasion uses a mechanical burr (dermabrader) to abrade off the top layer of skin and is most often used for scars or discrete facial lesions that require a limited area of resurfacing. The dermabrader is a small hand-held instrument that makes a humming noise, which you may hear. The abraded area will regenerate new skin in a similar fashion to laser resurfacing and chemical peels.
